But American apps have long been barred in China. “The TikTok bill appears likely to become law and China’s displeasure seems ironic, if not hypocritical, given its stance toward American social apps,” said Brock Silvers, managing director at Kaiyuan Capital. The Chinese government has said it strongly opposes a forced sale of TikTok, and it has the legal ability to do so. A man walks past the headquarters of ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, in Beijing. “While China has completely banned [these] American apps, TikTok enjoys all the benefits of America’s free and open legal and political systems,” he said.

July 18 (Reuters) - Warner Music Group (WMG.O), the record label conglomerate behind artists such as Radiohead, AC/DC and Madonna, has signed a licensing deal with Chinese short-video app TikTok to boost its social media revenues. The multi-year deal will help Warner Music's artists and songwriters unlock new revenue and marketing opportunities from TikTok's more than 1 billion users, the companies said on Tuesday. Social media platforms like TikTok have seen many new artists go big when content featuring their music went viral, helping them clinch major record deals. The deal licenses the collection of Warner Recorded Music and Warner Chappell Music to TikTok, TikTok Music - the social media app's premium streaming service, video editor CapCut, and TikTok's Commercial Music Library. But while TikTok has been the one in the spotlight, other Chinese apps that present similar issues are also experiencing massive popularity in the U.S. Gorman said as the U.S. considers the threat posed by TikTok, it will also need to develop a framework for how to evaluate the relative risk of Chinese apps. But in the meantime, U.S. consumers continue to turn to Chinese apps. "And then of course, there's the early growth of Lemon8, which suggests that the appetite for Chinese apps in the U.S. is still growing." And some say the most effective long-term solution for curbing the use of Chinese apps may be fostering an environment for robust alternatives to grow.

Greg Gianforte signed a bill Wednesday banning TikTok in the state. The bill, which will take effect in January, specifically names TikTok as its target, prohibiting the app from operating within state lines. In a statement to CNN, TikTok said it would push to defend the rights of users in Montana. “Governor Gianforte has signed a bill that infringes on the First Amendment rights of the people of Montana by unlawfully banning TikTok, a platform that empowers hundreds of thousands of people across the state. NetChoice, a technology trade group that includes TikTok as a member, called the Montana bill unconstitutional.
Its music ambitions could ruffle feathers at record labels and publishers — unless it pays out. TikTok's app regularly sparks trends that help songs go viral, making it a favorite of marketers at major labels and independents. TikTok works closely with record labels and artists on promotional efforts like livestreamed concerts, in-person performances, and private listening parties with TikTok stars. Spotify has maintained a tenuous relationship with the labels over the years as it's sought to balance profit margins while splitting revenue with artists, labels, and publishers. Still, even as record labels and publishers push TikTok to pay more to music rights holders, they're investing more in the app.

Amid talk of a TikTok ban, its Chinese parent company Bytedance is pushing a new app in the US called Lemon8. The early success of Lemon8 shows how banning TikTok wouldn't actually solve anything, experts say. As calls for a national TikTok ban escalate, its China-based parent company Bytedance is pushing a new app in the US called Lemon8. In fact, beyond TikTok and Lemon8, Bytedance has another success in its US portfolio: CapCut, a video-editing app. For Lemon8, Bytedance is pushing hard to get creators on the new app.
TikTok memes of celebrities like Pedro Pascal and Finn Wolfhard have taken off on the app. Legal experts told Insider including a celebrity's likeness in a video can be risky for brands. The app is awash with clips of actors like Finn Wolfhard snapping his fingers or Pedro Pascal eating a sandwich. Legal experts told Insider brand accounts should think twice before adding a famous actor's likeness to a video without their explicit permission. Using celebrity memes in videos isn't the only hazard for brands looking to join TikTok trends.

Some of her tips include posting six Instagram stories a day and posting to the grid once a day. Instagram is pushing content made using its own in-app tools and features, according to a creator who got a rundown from the company. Marietta said the Instagram partner manager she spoke with explained that Instagram is working on its editing tools. Instagram also wants creators to use its other in-app features, including its trending audio instead of "outside music," per Marietta. While nine hashtags on a post used to be ideal, Instagram now suggests three to five hashtags, Marietta said.
Both are owned by Beijing-based parent company ByteDance, but Douyin launched before TikTok and became a viral sensation in China. Besides TikTok, there’s also shopping app Temu, fast fashion retailer Shein and video editing app CapCut, which is also owned by ByteDance.
TikTok pile-on opens two cans of worms

Yet the bipartisan attack on the short-form video app, owned by China-based ByteDance, really points to two different complications – and each, in turn, opens up a much bigger can of worms. The overarching reason for Chew’s appearance is that President Joe Biden’s administration, and many in Congress, think TikTok’s Chinese backing makes it a dangerous tool of the People’s Republic. Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers accused TikTok of collecting biometric data and manipulating what information users see. It’s not just TikTok that potentially vacuums up consumer details while having close links to China. One of the hottest apps in the U.S. right now is TikTok’s lesser-known sibling that is also owned by Chinese parent ByteDance Ltd.App trackers show that CapCut, a video-editing tool that helps people quickly create online videos and memes, has been downloaded more in recent weeks than TikTok, the short-video sharing app that has faced rigorous scrutiny in the U.S. over ByteDance’s access to user data.
Some of her tips include posting six Instagram stories a day and posting to the grid once a day. Influencer Amy Marietta shared this in a TikTok post describing her takeaways from a meeting she had with Instagram earlier this week. (In her original TikTok, Marietta said the new guidance was once a day, but she corrected herself in a follow-up video.) Although Instagram typically pays creators more than TikTok, Marietta said creators may still choose to put their effort into other platforms. "I don't think people are going to stop spending as much time on TikTok and go focus on Instagram," Marietta said.

The company is now offering editorial placements to some SoundOn artists across TikTok, ByteDance's music streaming app Resso, and its video-editing app CapCut. These placements, which include being featured in high-traffic playlists, offer SoundOn users a unique path to being discovered. TikTok's parent ByteDance previously sought to hire for a similar A&R role in Jakarta, Music Business Worldwide reported in May.
